Flu and cold season is upon us.  Make it the happiest healthiest holiday season yet and avoid getting sick with a few easy choices.  Nothing gets in the way of this time of year like a cold. Once you feel that tickle in your throat or the first sniffle of congestion, it’s probably too late.

Symptoms of the flu or colds can emerge anywhere from one to four days after you’ve been exposed to the virus. Then you are left at the mercy of over-the counter remedies from the drug store. If you take the right precautions, you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

The precautions can be as easy and simple as getting adequate sleep and getting a massage on a regular basis.  The key to staying healthy is tied closely to sleep. When your body is poorly rested, you are more susceptible to illness because your mind and body are taxed, unable to function properly. People who sleep fewer than seven hours are almost three times more likely to develop a cold than people who get a full eight or more hours of sleep each night.

Massage therapy, as a part of your regular routine, can make it much easier to get a good night’s rest each and every night.  Massage therapy reduces the stress hormone cortisol and releases endorphins. This makes you feel more relaxed and makes it much easier to unwind. Think how relaxed you feel after a massage…….this can help you quickly drift into a more restful sleep at night. When your body is in a relaxed state, it can better fight off bacteria and infections, because the immune system will be operating at peak efficiency. When you are stressed, the immune system weakens, and makes it much more likely that you will catch a cold.

Massage is important to helping prevent colds and flu and helping you to have a happy and healthy holiday season. You’ll be much more productive with your holiday preparations when you feel healthy and well-rested!
